Books we would put in a child’s hands

Worksheets cover the practice — holding a pencil, forming a letter, counting to twenty. They are not meant to cover everything. A child who traces the letter B all week still needs someone to read them a story about a bear.

This is a short list, and it stays short on purpose. Every title here is one we would actually buy for a child of this age.

How these links work: Minimeo is a participant in the Amazon Associates Programme. If you buy something through one of these links we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Prices shown are approximate — Amazon’s own page is always the accurate one. We only list things we would hand to a child ourselves.

How we choose what goes on this list

It survives a toddlerA board book that tears on the second reading is not a bargain. For the youngest ages we look at how a book is bound before we look at the story.
It gives a grown-up something to doThe best books at this age are not read silently. We favour ones with something to point at, count, or ask a question about on every page.
It is not a worksheet in disguiseIf a book only drills what our printables already drill, it does not earn a place here. These sit beside the practice rather than repeating it.

The printables are still the main event
