What a maze teaches

Looking ahead. A child who draws straight into the first dead end is solving it by trial and error; one who traces the route with a finger first is planning. That shift usually happens between five and six, and mazes are one of the few activities where you can watch it happen.

Wide paths first

For four-year-olds the path needs to be wide enough that staying inside it is not the hard part — the thinking should be the hard part, not the pencil control. Narrow, dense mazes belong to six and above.

Finger first, pencil second

Letting a child trace the route with a finger before committing a pencil line removes the fear of getting it wrong, and it is exactly the planning habit the activity is meant to build. It also saves a lot of rubbing out.

Maze & Path Finding worksheets — common questions

What age are mazes suitable for?

From about four with wide, short paths. Branching mazes with dead ends suit six and above.

My child keeps hitting dead ends — should I help?

Suggest tracing the route with a finger first. Planning before drawing is the skill the maze is teaching.
