What most 4 year olds can do
A rough guide, not a test. Children vary by a year either way and later is not behind.
- Traces letters and numbers with a dotted guide
- Counts objects one by one up to about ten
- Recognises many capital letters, often the ones in their name
- Copies a square and a cross; a triangle is harder
- Works for ten to fifteen minutes on something they like
Capitals, and the letters in their own name
Four is the usual age for letters to start meaning something, and the ones that arrive first are almost always the child's own initials. Start there rather than at A — a letter that belongs to them is remembered in a way the alphabet in order is not. Capitals before lowercase, because they are built from simpler strokes.
Counting things, not reciting numbers
Plenty of four-year-olds can say the numbers to twenty and still cannot tell you how many biscuits are on a plate. Those are different skills. Counting worksheets that ask a child to count objects and circle the answer test the one that matters, and it is worth spending time there before moving on.
Patterns and matching are doing more than they look
Continuing a red-blue-red-blue pattern is early logical reasoning, and matching trains the visual discrimination that later stops b and d being confused. These pages look like the easy ones and are among the most useful at this age.
