What most 6 year olds can do
A rough guide, not a test. Children vary by a year either way and later is not behind.
- Writes capital and small letters unaided
- Reads simple sentences aloud
- Adds and subtracts within twenty
- Knows a hundred or more sight words
- Works for twenty to thirty minutes
Handwriting moves from shape to speed
By six, most children can form letters; the work shifts to doing it consistently and reasonably fast. Ruled lines with a middle guide help, because the problem at this age is usually size and placement rather than shape — ascenders too short, letters drifting above the line.
Reading whole sentences
Sounding out individual words and reading a sentence smoothly are different jobs. A child who reads every word correctly but cannot say what the sentence meant is spending all their attention on decoding. More reading at an easier level fixes that faster than harder material does.
Arithmetic with meaning
Addition and subtraction within twenty, and the start of word problems — which are harder than the sums inside them, because the child has to work out what is being asked before they can do any arithmetic. Reading the problem aloud together is usually the unlock.
