What most 5 year olds can do
A rough guide, not a test. Children vary by a year either way and later is not behind.
- Writes most capital letters without a guide
- Writes numbers to ten, with some reversals still
- Blends simple three-letter words like cat and pin
- Counts to twenty and adds within five
- Works for fifteen to twenty minutes
From tracing to copying to writing
There are three stages and skipping the middle one causes most of the trouble. Tracing over a dotted letter, then copying a letter that is printed beside a blank space, then writing it from memory. A child who moves straight from tracing to a blank line often stalls, and it looks like a problem when it is a missing step.
Reversals are normal at five
Writing b for d, or 3 backwards, is expected at five and usually well into six. It is almost always a question of where the stroke starts rather than how the letter is seen. Worksheets that mark the starting point fix it faster than correcting the finished letter does.
First reading: sounds, then sight words
Blending c-a-t into cat is the mechanical heart of reading, and it takes many repetitions before it becomes automatic. Alongside it, a short list of sight words — the, was, said — covers the very common words that do not sound out. Roughly five new sight words a week is a realistic pace.
Worksheets for 5 year olds — common questions
What should a 5 year old be able to write?
Most capital letters and numbers to ten without a guide, their own name, and simple words with help. Reversals are still normal.
Why does my 5 year old write letters backwards?
It is almost always about where the stroke begins, not about how they see the letter, and it is normal to about seven. Worksheets that mark the starting point help most.
When should a 5 year old start reading?
Blending three-letter words usually starts around five, alongside a handful of sight words a week. Some children are a year either side of that.
