Short and often beats long and occasional

Five minutes of flash cards a day does more than half an hour on a Sunday. The reason is spacing: material met repeatedly over days is retained far better than the same amount met once. Flash cards are the easiest way to get that rhythm with a four-year-old, because a round takes two minutes.

Printing and cutting

Print on the heaviest paper your printer takes — 160 to 200 gsm if it will manage it — or paste onto card. Cards that flop are hard for small hands to hold. Laminating is worth the effort for a set you will use daily for a term.

Ways to use a set beyond showing them

Lay them face down and play pairs. Spread them out and ask the child to find a letter. Hide one and ask which is missing. Sort them into piles. A set of cards a child handles themselves is remembered better than a set an adult holds up, because doing beats watching.

When flash cards do not help

They are good for facts with one right answer — this letter, this number, this colour. They do not teach understanding. A child can name every number card and still not be able to count seven biscuits, so keep counting real objects alongside.

Flash Cards worksheets — common questions

What paper should I print flash cards on?

As heavy as your printer accepts, ideally 160–200 gsm, or paste ordinary prints onto card. Flimsy cards are hard for small hands.

How long should a flash card session be?

Two to five minutes, daily. Short and frequent beats long and occasional by a wide margin.

What age are flash cards suitable for?

From about three, once a child can hold a card and enjoys naming things. Below that, real objects work better.

Should I laminate them?

Worth it for a set you will use every day for a term. Otherwise printing a fresh set when they wear out is simpler.
