How the Tamil alphabet is built
Tamil has 247 letters, which sounds impossible until you see the structure. There are 12 uyir ezhuthukkal (vowels) and 18 mei ezhuthukkal (consonants). Every one of the remaining 216 is a uyirmei — a consonant combined with a vowel, formed by a predictable mark. A child who knows the 12 and the 18, and the handful of marks, can read and write all 247. That is why the order of teaching matters far more in Tamil than in English.
Where to start
Uyir ezhuthukkal first — அ ஆ இ ஈ உ ஊ எ ஏ ஐ ஒ ஓ ஔ. They are the letters a child already hears at the start of words, and they are the vowel sounds that later combine with every consonant. Mei ezhuthukkal come next. Uyirmei combinations follow naturally once both halves are familiar, because the child is then recognising a pattern rather than memorising 216 new shapes.
Writing Tamil by hand
Tamil letters are built from curves far more than English ones, which suits young children — a curve is an easier stroke than a diagonal. Stroke direction still matters, and it is worth watching the first few times rather than correcting afterwards. Children who have already done English tracing usually move through Tamil letter practice noticeably faster, because the pencil control is already there.
For schools and homes in Tamil Nadu
These sheets print on plain A4 and are used the same way in a classroom as at a kitchen table. For LKG, a page of uyir ezhuthukkal a week is a realistic pace. For UKG, letters plus simple words. Schools may print a set for every child in the class — the licence covers classroom use.
Tamil worksheets — common questions
How many letters are there in Tamil?
247 — 12 vowels (uyir), 18 consonants (mei), 216 combined letters (uyirmei) and the aytham. Because the 216 are formed by combining the first 30, a child only needs to learn 30 shapes and a few marks.
Which Tamil letters should a child learn first?
The 12 uyir ezhuthukkal. They carry the vowel sounds that combine with every consonant later, so learning them first makes the rest a pattern rather than a list.
Are these Tamil worksheets suitable for LKG and UKG?
Yes. Letter tracing suits LKG; letters with words and short sentences suit UKG. Ages 4 to 8 overall.
Can a school in Tamil Nadu print these for a whole class?
Yes — the licence covers classroom printing, so a teacher can run off a set for every child.
