What is Christmas?
Christmas is celebrated on 25 December and marks the birth of Jesus. For children it usually means a decorated tree, cards, carols, a stocking or a gift, and time with family. It is a public holiday in India and in most of the world, and in Indian schools it falls right at the start of the winter break.
Why do we celebrate Christmas?
For Christians it marks the birth of Jesus, retold each year through the nativity: the stable, the shepherds, the star. Around that, much of what children recognise came later and from many places. The decorated tree came from Germany, carols from medieval Europe, greeting cards from Victorian England.
How to explain Christmas to a young child
The star and the stable are the parts small children hold on to. Beyond the story, Christmas is a good moment to talk about giving rather than getting, which is easier to show than to explain. Making something by hand to give away usually lands better than a conversation about it.
When is Christmas?
25 December every year — a Friday in 2026. Most Indian schools break up in the week before, so the activity pack is usually printed in the second or third week of December.
