About Holi

What is Holi?
Holi is the Indian festival of colours, celebrated over two days at the end of winter. On the evening before, a bonfire is lit. The next morning people throw coloured powder called gulal and splash water at each other in the street. It is the least formal festival of the Indian year, the one day when the usual rules about clean clothes are suspended.
Why do we celebrate Holi?
The bonfire on the first night, Holika Dahan, comes from the story of Prahlad, who survived a fire that Holika did not. Again, good coming through danger unharmed. The colours on the second day are tied to Krishna, and to the arrival of spring once the winter crop is in. It is a harvest festival and a spring festival at the same time.
How to explain Holi to a young child
Children need no help understanding Holi. They understand it faster than adults do. The part worth adding is why: winter has ended, the field has been harvested, and for one day everyone is the same colour.
